Mukhota

PROBLEM

In India, more than thousands of village fishermen are arrested each year for illegally crossing international sea borders. Because they lack the correct equipment, most of them end up in foreign prisons and are cut off from their families for years, some even loose their Lives.

SOLUTION

We found that fishermen across the villages carry a mask called a MUKHOTA on the fishing boats. As cultural beliefs this mask is used to keep them safe and ward off evil spirits and danger. A simple GPS system with pre-loaded distances was created, which was used to measure and track their boats latitude and longitude positions. Once they got to close to an international sea boarders the alarm was triggered and alerted the fishermen in real time to turn back.

RESULTS

We have distributed over 2,000 Mukhota masks to fishermen across coastal villages in India and to date they have been activated over 15,000 times in multiple regions. More importantly the Mukhota has helped thousands of Fishermen in India, return home safely 10 their loved ones everyday.
